Wellness cHECK-IN
Throughout the day, I provided students with a wellness check-in sheet. At the start of each lesson, students took out a whiteboard marker and circled how they were feeling on the sheet. I would walk around the room, collect each sheet and check-in with the student. The wellness check-ins allowed students to identify how they were feeling throughout the day and communicate their feelings to me.

Mindfulness duo-tangs
|
Throughout the day I scheduled 15 minute mindful breaks. Students were given this time to choose what mindful activity they wanted to do. At the start of my inquiry, I made each student a mindful duo-tang to keep at their desk. In the duotang I included breathing exercise sheets, journaling prompts and colouring pages. I provided students choice and emphasized the importance of choosing an activity that would help them regulate.

Brain Breaks
Breathing Exercises
Take 5 Breathing Exercise: Throughout the day, I introduced the take 5 breathing exercise as a way to regulate students throughout their day. To introduce the activity we discussed how taking time during the day to clear our minds and relax can help us focus when we get back to our school work. Students traced around their fingers, breathing in as they traced up their finger and then breathing out as they trace down. Reach Like a Tree: Students will start with their hands down by their sides, as they take a deep breath in they will reach their hands up to the sky. As students breath out, have them bring their hands back down to their sides. Students will run through this sequence for three cycles. |
"Simon Says"
Ready, Steady, Wiggle
Another movement break I incorporated throughout the day was "Ready, Set, Wiggle." The activity prompted students to wiggle their bodies when they heard the prompt. Students that wiggled when the prompt wasn't correct were required to sit down. This movement break not only allowed students time to move their body and take a break from academic material, it also encouraged students to listen carefully for the instructional prompt.
